Sometimes, Karma can catch up with you right away.
So, as I recall you were one that stood up for me yesterday, and surely you could not have anticipated that ATE actually answer your post. . . . . . so, I dont' detect some elaborate ploy here.
Anyway, as you probably know, ATE is the top authority in the world in omaha. I used to add the word "by far" but after the death of my beloved Paragirl, I decided to be less arrogent.
Here's the thing. I sometimes accept a pro-bono student, especially if they deserve it. BUT, you've picked the game that requires like twenty times the time to get good (as opposed to schmold 'em )
So, I can help somewhat, (gratis) BUT you're looking at an AWFUL lot to know . . .So, I won't be able to COMPLETLY teach you the game.
Hopefully, you're in the US, as I have unlimited phone. If not then you must call me.
Send me a PM and we'll talk further.
In the meantime, we'll start with a few things. The first is to realize that omaha is NOTHING like hold em, so don't even attempt to make a comparison, You'll need to start with a blank mind, and just (when playing omaha) COMPLETLY FORGET everything you know about SCHMOLD 'EM (ED note "schmold 'em, is ATE's contemptuous term for "hold 'em, which reflects my raging hatred not only of the game, but of the "hold em mafia," the exists to complete their EVIL goal, to make every game in the world hold em"
Anyone serious about POKER, needs to realize that hold em is NOT poker, and poker is NOT hold em.
Everyone one of you that refuses to play games other than hold em, are just bringing us one step closer to the eage of a hold em infested, NON poker world.
You need to even learn a new vocabulary, and FORGET certain words. Such as "nine"
"TWO PAIR" "top pair" Open-end straight draw.
Things things don't exist in omaha, except when combined with other more suitable hands/draws.
yes, there are things that appear to be quite terrifying, such as quartering and counterfeiting, but as soon as you realize that they are all just a part of the skill of the game, you are well on your way to mastering a game where the
SUCKER LIVES ONES, have a much much much much less of a chance to beat you, and will very often be putting in a lot of action, drawing totally dead.
The next little tidbit I'll give, is this: KNOW that omaha is very player-count sensitive. For this reason, you had better cdome to know that how you proceed is TOTALLY different, from:
(1) heads-up to three players
(2) three to four
(3) four or more.
NOt only in the hand you're playing, but also the general type of game you're playing
I.E. playing a 30-60 game, where just about every pot is heads-up, will require a TOTALLY different strategy, for a loose 3-6 game, with 5 or more players in every pot.
This difference is SO prounced, that you can have a hand that is a BET, with, say one opponent, and a check-and-fold for a large field.
Next, we find that Pot and no limit, are TOTALLY different than limit. The biggest difference here, is playing the nut low. In LIMIT< nut low can often be profitable, but in pot limit, it's totally different, and . . ..
Anyway, I could sit here for a month non stop, and still not cover everything.
The basic point I'm trying to make, is that until you can master all the differences between the different limits and betting structures, you should just pick one and try to master that.
Let's start with some term familiarization
(Non counterfeitable low) This is a low where you have the THREE lowest cards not on the board, so that if you pair up, you still have the nut low. Same applies for DRAWS to the nut low. MUCH more powerful than just "nut low"
(Wrap around straight draw)
This is where some of the ranks of cards that make your straight, are IN YOUR HAND, thus the low is "wrapped around"
As opposed to the open-end of hold em, a wraparound draw has from 3, to as many as 6 different ranks of cards that can complete a straight. Sometimes, this draw can be powerful, other times not so, depending on factors too numerous to list at this time.
Suffice it to say, that if having 4 ranks to make a striahgt mahy or may not be good, then certainly we are not interested in "open end" draws (two cards only to make hand)
(Quartering) Getting only a quarter of the pot, Also sixthing, and eigthing. something to KNOW about, and master , NOT to worry about.
THE WHOLE EXISTENCE OF QUARTERING, IS IN FACT ONE OF THE HUGE REASONS WHY OMAHA, ESPECIALLY POT LIMIT, IS POSSIBLE.
I.E. it's like a GAZILLION t imes easier to get HALF of an opponent's money (by having the high AND the low) Than it is to get ALL his money, by having them call with a non-nut hand.
anyway, I'll try to arrange like maybe a one-hour complimentary lesson, PM me
