Yeah, you could have pushed him.
But on the other side, you could say that you are putting 50% of your stack on a coinflip, pretty early in the tournament. Then you could have flat called and re-evaluated the flop.
So, yeah, you have two choices.

I shove for sure. I hate calling behind there and 88 clearly beats a typical short stacked players range there. Even if you called behind there you shouldnt be folding if he shoves that flop anyway.

also if you lose you are down to 10x and still have a workable stack and can get back to where you were before, and if you win you have a 30x stack and are in great shape for the rest of the tournament

i think by flat calling here you are giving the big blind odds to see a flop then you are 3 handed to a flop with only a pair of 8's
isolate and shove here take a coinflip if thats whats there, if he has a better hand than you then so be it, you will still have a semi-workable stack

he is practically all-in if you just call, so to avoid any more players in the pot, SHOVE and race with ur 88 against 1 guy u have covered in chips.
