I do call here, even at the low blind levels, because I know that I still have a decent stack compared to the blinds if I lose, and if you win you basically double and you're sittin great. What was his betting/calling structure in the first hand?

With the read, easy call.
He's can easily reraise A7+ after losing 1/3 of his stack playing wrong and now thinks he is shortstacked and needs to make a move. Most of the times in this spot I expect to be against a weaker Ace
